Ever wonder what all this <g> (grinning) is about
in your e-mails? Years ago, Internet users wanted
to come up with ways to show emotions in their writing...especially while typing on live chat lines.
It's hard to keep up in an Internet chat room, with
tons of people talking and flirting, when you have to
spell everything out. And what would flirting be without
a little ;-) (wink)?
So commonly recognized e-mail/chat
"emoticons" were gradually created. You can express
yourself three ways: using visual emoticons, such as a smile
:-) (turn your head sideways to the left to see the
face), character emoticons such as <vbeg> (very big
evil grin) and short-hand expressions such as
PMFJI (pardon me for jumping in) which save a whole lot
of typing.
There are lots of creative ways to express
yourself, and when you're in a chat room with lots of
chatter and fast scrolling text, you need to either be a
very fast typist or learn to appreciate emoticons. To
share the fun, here are all the ones I can remember. If
I missed your favorite emoticon, please e-mail me
at dian@mousetrax.com and let me know!
